Indian women in sports have come a long way in the past few decades. They have faced numerous challenges, including a lack of facilities, financial constraints, societal pressures, and limited opportunities. Despite these obstacles, they have shown incredible resilience, determination, and passion for their sport.
There has been a significant rise in the number of successful female athletes in India with the first major achievement for Indian women in sports coming in the year 2000 when Karnam Malleswari won a bronze medal at the Olympics in Sydney, making her the first Indian female weightlifter to achieve this feat.
Karnam’s remarkable performance and determination to succeed inspired other Indian women athletes to believe in themselves and aim for glory at the international level. This event was a catalyst for the next generation of Indian women athletes, including MC Mary Kom, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, and Sakshi Malik, who went on to win Olympic medals themselves.
